How winning the BM Barista Championship took Calvin to Brazil

BM Barista Championship 2026

Planting his own coffee tree on a farm in Brazil wasn’t something Calvin ever thought he’d get the chance to do.

But winning the BM Barista Championship 2026 took him right to the source of the coffee he works with every day.

As part of his prize, Calvin travelled to Brazil with Fabio and Rob, founders of Notes Coffee, along with Monika, also from Notes coffee spending time on coffee farms and learning more about the people, skills and work behind every cup.

From flower to coffee cherry

One of the highlights for Calvin was seeing coffee growing and understanding what happens long before it reaches the barista.

“I saw the evolution of the coffee plant, from the coffee flower to the coffee cherry, and how it all starts with the coffee tree.

“I also learned how much care and work goes into producing coffee, and how important the farmers are to the whole process.”

Calvin was able to see the different stages coffee goes through, from planting and harvesting to roasting and brewing.

“It was such an amazing experience to see and learn about the process behind every cup of coffee.”

Planting his own coffee tree

There was also a moment Calvin hadn’t expected: the chance to plant a coffee tree himself.

“We planted our own coffee tree as well. I never thought I’d be able to do this in my life. I’m so grateful and thankful for this experience.”

It’s a memory he’s unlikely to forget and one that gave him an even greater appreciation of where coffee comes from.

Bringing the experience back with him

The trip has given Calvin more knowledge and understanding to take back into his role as a barista.

“This trip to Brazil helped me understand more about coffee, from the farm to the cup. It gave me more knowledge and a deeper appreciation for coffee, which I can bring into my career as a barista.”

He’s keen to keep learning too.

“I want to grow my skills, inspire others and build a career in coffee.”

Why give the BM Barista Championship a go?

For Calvin, entering the competition has led to opportunities and experiences he couldn’t have predicted.

“It’s a great way to challenge yourself, grow your skills and connect with the coffee community.”

And his advice for other baristas who want to develop?

“Stay curious, keep practising and don’t be afraid to learn from others. Small improvements every day really add up.”

Looking back on the competition and his trip to Brazil, Calvin added:

“Thank you so much to BM Caterers for putting together this amazing event and giving me the opportunity to showcase my talent and skills as a barista. I’m truly grateful for the experience.

“A huge thank you as well to Notes Coffee, Fabio and Rob, for giving me this unforgettable experience. I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity and for the memories I’ll always cherish.”
