Oat crumble

Oat crumble

Not all crumble toppings are created equal. This one is brilliantly simple, incredibly versatile, and designed to work across both sweet and savoury dishes.

Made with just three ingredients – salted butter, jumbo oats, and plain flour – this oat crumble adds texture and brings a rich, buttery finish to any dish. Think fruit crumbles, gratins, cauliflower cheese, and roasted veg bakes.

As the oats have time to hydrate before baking, they absorb flavour, bake evenly, and give you that perfect crisp finish without feeling overly dry. The key is combining them with a little fat before cooking. Oil, milk, and butter work wonders in this recipe.

Ingredients

Makes enough for 1 large crumble or several smaller dishes

Method

  1. Add all the ingredients to a large mixing bowl.

Place the diced butter, jumbo oats, and plain flour into the bowl.

  2. Rub together to form a crumble.

Using your fingertips, rub the butter into the flour and oats using the same method you would for a traditional crumble topping. You’re looking for a rough, crumbly texture rather than a smooth dough.

  3. Use straight away or chill until needed.

Once mixed, the crumble is ready to use on sweet or savoury dishes.

  4. Scatter over your chosen dish and bake until golden.

Use it to top fruit fillings, gratins, roasted vegetables or baked savoury dishes, then bake until crisp and golden.
