Wines for Christmas Day

Wines for Christmas Day

Someone asked me the other day what wines, after recommending some wines to consider, I would be drinking on Christmas day.

Assuming that I shall be eating traditional Christmas fayre, here we go.

Starting with

Charles Lecouvey Cuvee Reserve Brut

This is a champagne on special offer at Waitrose. Classic champagne flavours from classic champagne grapes. Apples and biscuits.

Down from Ā£24.99 to Ā£15.99. Excellent value

Followed by

Chateau Minuty 2017

M de Minuty

Provence France.

We had this during our best meal in France this year, at a stunning restaurant in the ancient town of Uzes. Itā€™s from the CĆ“tes de Provence, and of course it is a rosĆ©.

Hadnā€™t seen any for years, and realised again how good it was. From the St TropezĀ  peninsular, flavours of citrus and candied fruit from the little known Tibouren grape make for a lovely wine. Ā£11.99 at Majestic and others

With the Turkey

Monthelie 2014 Chateau de Puligny-Montrachet

Burgundy

A lovely pinot noir from one of the best regions in France. Occasionally I go to the Berry Bros and Rudd bin ends shop which is in Basingstoke. Wonderful wines on sale at remarkably reduced prices as they want to get rid of small stocks they have left. I bought these last year and should be ideal for drinking now. Originally Ā£30+ per bottle but I think I got them for aboutĀ£20. Worth a visit and you donā€™t have to spend Ā£20, lots much less.

And with the Pud,

Chateau des Charmes Icewine 2012

Ontario. Canada

A present from a great friend brought back from Canada. Icewines from Canada are quite simply stunning. The grapes are left to freeze on the vines, and picked in either December or January at a temperature of -10 degrees centigrade. The concentrated juice is then fermented and should give a delicious nectar with apricot and honey.

No idea of the price.

Looking forward to it!

It only remains to wish you all a very Happy Christmas and a great New Year.
